Costume (Or What I’m Wearing)

Recent ideas for my performance involving what I’ll be wearing have been few and far between as this element of my performance is one I haven’t considered wholly. As a part of the character I am, I already know that won’t be wearing anything yellow – my character doesn’t like the character yellow, prefers to disassociate himself with anything yellow. However, without wanting to overkill my character with characteristics that could be associated with OCD, I’m inputting a little bit of myself into my character (as I was originally going to) by making my characters favourite colour red.

The idea of having a favourite colour I feel would be better as something that’s more subtle as a part of my character as oppose to making it incredibly obvious. Ideas came about of myself wearing all red before, however this wasn’t something that I thought would be something that I’d consider to be helpful towards my performance; I feel it may be a little distracting. If I wore red shoes and a red-ish shirt, I feel it would give myself that subtlety of red I would need, but also hopefully portray the idea that a mental condition such as OCD doesn’t affect the way we see people without talking to them. This idea would be down to preconceptions and how we see people and how we see people that we see everyday but don’t talk to or know. I would assume this where the idea of ‘people watching’ would have its origins based in, watching people as they’re walking or doing whatever activity they are doing and assuming what they would be in the rest of their lives. Although this could be one concept of ‘people watching’.

The main idea though is rooted in preconceptions of those with mental issues, no matter how small or large they may be, anyone we pass in the street could have any sort of mental illness, whether it be OCD or
